Rodinia Map as of 6-25-11 by farawayforest Rodinia Map as of 6-25-11 by farawayforest
This is the map of my Sci-fi/Fantasy world Rodinia.
Here's some drawings of some of the places.
Palace of Tiamat
Norak Field
:thumb188197231:Heliopolis
West Nether-Haven
Edgeton
Oceania

Update: I added some more places and tried to make it look a little more realistic.

the comet hit and the resulting impact melted the ice caps and flooded everything except a few highlands that were either populated or forced to be populated

Yeah, and it uplifted some of the land too.

Nice map - but you need to fix your rivers :-)

Thanks but why?
They all flow from the spring at lake Zephyr.

Right, but in totally different directions. And they split up in the center of the map. Real rivers don't do that. (they might split, but that's very, very local and not on a continental scale. So you could probably get away with the split in the river delta in the SW.) Eventually one of the two directions would win out as the river bed erodes. In this case, it seems likely that the eastern outflow would be "the one".

It's also not clear what feeds Lake Zephyr. I guess it's possible that water just sort of "seeps out" of nearby mountains, or just collects as rain runoff without forming rivers, but then Lake Zephyr probably wouldn't feed continent-wide rivers - and let's not forget that Zephyr is about a thousand kilometers long. I guess it could be a whole number of rivers that are too small to show at this scale, though.

I recommend looking at real maps with an eye on rivers. See how they flow, and how they match terrain, etc. :)

Wow! excellent advice!
Thank you for taking the time to analyze the rivers.
I've always felt something looked slightly off but I couldn't put a finger on it.
But what if they were ancient canals so eroded that they look like natural rivers from the ground.
But from space, you can see their unnatural patterns.

I should still try to make it look more obvious or natural though.
And one mountain spring won't be enough to feed a whole continent.
I think they're on a separate layer in photoshop so it would be easy to move them around.
Let me know if you have any other specific ideas on how they should flow.

How does the rest of the map work or you?

Sorry for the late reply.

If the rivers are ancient canals, the same still holds true: Water will flow downhill. I guess you could just keep everything level and closed, and refill water as it evaporates. But then once the canals are no longer maintained they will dry up or sooner or later one of the ends would break, water would start moving. You'd either end up with a dry canal system or, if the water replenishes itself somehow, with a river system that might not have naturally formed where it is, but will still in the end look like rivers - depends a bit on how much time passes. But once water does flow, it'll quickly find an "optimum route".

As for feeding rivers, you usually have several tributaries. I am really not an expert on this - just the bits and pieces I pick up for world-building - but the Wikipedia articles on Rivers and on Drainage basins are probably a good read if you want to make your rivers more natural: [link] and [link]

The rest of the map is fine. The shape looks like it's an old shield volcano, which is kinda neat because even if it's extinct you could still have old lava fields, basalt etc for more varied terrain. If you wanted to improve the map, beyond fixing the rivers, then I think breaking up the woodlands and adding some plains, swamps etc. (I see you have a Marshland in the south. The colors are a bit hard to distinguish for me, as I am colorblind.)

Anyway, sorry for the long post. Hope you find it helpful :)

So cool that you took such an interest in my work.

I've always liked the idea inspired by canals on Mars.
Even though it was false, the idea that ancient Martians carved them to transport water to the wasteland at the equator from the poles.
That's how I picture the ancient "Rivers" of Rodinia.
The cold water from the Plateau lake feeds the desert below.
The system was constructed a thousand years ago after a catastrophe wiped out the wasteland.
Planetary engineering on such a grand scale seems like something a futuristic society would do.
It'd be cool to make a planetary river system that had a few tell tail signs of human intervention but was mostly eroded by the "optimum route".

I really need to redo them to try to make that more evident.
Let me know if you'd like to collaborate on it.
I'll give you credit for you impute.
Only if it sounds like fun to you.

I'll check out the river links too.
Thanks again.:)

Yes of course you can print out whatever you like!:)
I really want to start a RP campaign!
Ikiyou and I played a while back.
You and I could start one if you want. if you have time.
There's a lot of info on my profile but we could kind of learn as we go.
I imagine there are way more things that can happen than things that can't happen.
My whole thing is that you can't make a doomsday device that destroys the world or that makes your character invincible and in turn I can't make a situation where you get wiped out with no warning and with no chance to fight.
Other than that I'm pretty much up for anything in between.
I actually have the world more worked out in my head than it ever has been.:)
